Have you ever had a bad attitude? by Bob Proctor
Victor Frankl once wrote, “Everything can be taken from a person but one thing: the last of human freedoms – to choose one’s attitudes in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” Frankl was right. Attitude is a choice. You could be faced with a thousand problems, many or most over which you have absolutely no control. However, there is always one thing you are in complete and absolute control of and that is your own attitude.
When you surrender control of your attitude to what appears to be a negative situation, you will react to that situation. More often than not, reacting is inappropriate. On the other hand, if you were to remain objective, you would respond to the situation appropriately, thereby creating a winning situation.
If attitude is such an important word, why do so few people understand it? To be honest, it wasn’t until I was in my late 20s when I finally understood its full impact. All through my teens and into my early adult life, I can’t tell you the number of times that I heard, “Bob, if you’d just change your attitude, you would do a lot better.” In retrospect I can easily see the cause of my problem. I didn’t know what attitude was, let alone know how to change it!
Attitude is the composite of your thoughts, feelings and actions. Your conscious mind controls feeling and ultimately dictates whether your feelings will be positive or negative by your choice of thoughts, then your body displays those choices through action and behavior.
Attitude is actually a creative cycle that begins with your choice of thoughts. You do choose your thoughts and that choice is where your attitude originates. As you internalize ideas or become emotionally involved with your thoughts, you create the second stage in forming an attitude; you move your entire being – mind and body – into a new “vibration.” Your conscious awareness of this vibration is referred to as “feeling”.Your feelings are then expressed in actions or behaviors that produce the various results in your life.
Positive results are always the effect of a positive attitude. Attitude and results are inseparable. They follow one another like night follows day. What I mean by that is: one is the cause, the other, the result. There is a term we use to distinguish this “cause and effect” relationship, it is called The Law of Cause and Effect. Simply stated, if you think in negative terms, you will get negative results; if you think in positive terms you will achieve positive results. Ralph Waldo Emerson reiterated that same point when he said, “A person is what they think about all day long.” The results you achieve in life are nothing more than an expression of your thoughts, feelings, and actions. Take a close look at your life and evaluate the results you are achieving in various areas. See if you are able to relate your attitude to your results.
Winning and losing are opposite sides of the same coin – and that coin is attitude. There are many things wrong in this world; unfortunately that is all some people are able to see. Those who view the world in this light are often unhappy and somewhat cynical. Usually, their life is one of lack and limitation and it almost appears as if they move from one bad experience to another. I know people who are like this and I’m certain you do as well. It would appear as if they were born with a streak of bad luck and it has followed them around their whole life. These individuals are quick to blame circumstances or other people for their problems, rather than accepting responsibility for their life and their attitude.
Conversely, there are others who are forever winning and living the good life. They are the real movers and shakers who make things happen. They seem to go from one major accomplishment to another. They’re in control of their life; they know where they are going and know they will get there. They are the real winners in life and their wins are a matter of choice.
You can experience that kind of life as well, you only need to decide. Making that simple decision is the first step to a new life. Dorothea Brand once said, “Act as if it were impossible to fail,” and I challenge you to do so. By simply becoming aware that you can choose your thoughts each and every day, you will change your entire outlook. You have the power to choose an abundant life no matter your circumstances. That active choice will allow other positive people and opportunities to be attracted into your life. Don’t wait to experience all the wonderful things the universe has in store for you. Start today by working on your attitude and welcome the abundant life that you were meant to lead.
To your success,
Bob Proctor

… it’s nearly bankrupt but we see the potential.

“People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”
As a student, several years ago, I heard a talk –
“We have taken over this company, it’s nearly bankrupt but we see the potential.
Staff – tell us what you think we can do (that won’t cost any money) to get more customers.”
The answers were surprising, although in retrospect, perhaps obvious.
One of the ideas that came through that brainstorming session was to always spell peoples names correctly.
Was that going to cost anything? No.
Was it possible that it might keep existing and prospective customers happy if all documentation has their correctly spelt name on it? Absolutely.
“More important is the RESPECT displayed by such attention to detail and the way in which this permeates the whole system” said Tom Ansley, who took over Elliott International in South Africa, over 30 years ago.
They moved Elliott from bankruptcy to number one in the world in eight years.
This talk made a big impact on me. (Sometimes you don’t know whose lives you’re impacting! I contacted Tom last week – and he was touched that his talk in 1990 had made such an impression on me!)
Tom Ansley talks about the early days:
“As for the short term results of those early and elementary steps, they were not huge but there was a quick and remarkable change in the ATTITUDE of our people.
They knew I was deeply interested in their well being and their development in the company and they were enthusiastic about applying such simple and elementary principles as spelling peoples names correctly, answering the telephone within 3 rings, using the “please” and “thank you’s” when dealing with one another etc.
All of this made a huge difference to the morale of the company and led, in the long term, to Elliott receiving a most prestigious industry award from London.”
“I’ve told many audiences in South Africa and all over the world, it is those simple principles, applied with enthusiasm and commitment by everyone, especially by me, which contributed largely to the massive development of ELLIOTT in those difficult but exciting times.
Many valuable ideas originated from those meetings with our people when I encouraged them to make a difference by participating in the discussions in an open and honest way. We learned, for example, that it is the business appreciating the value of never failing to return telephone calls which will endure.
The way in which we talk to customers, always with that smile and enthusiasm in the voice, makes a huge difference. We want to leave everyone who calls us or who visits our offices with the indelible impression that doing business with Elliott is a special and “customer friendly” experience.
Old fashioned?? Sure thing – but it still works in the modern age of technology!!!!!”
We can get all the theory and teaching about building businesses and increasing profit, being happy or achieving your goals – but there are also some really basic common-sense principles that apply to every aspect of our lives.
Do you care enough about your customers or those around you?
Do you have an attitude of respect for yourself and others?
Do you want profits enough?
Enough to pay attention to this detail?
(have we spelt your name correctly today?!)
Enjoy the rest of your Chooseday, with special thoughts to those in Christchurch, New Zealand after the earthquake today.
Kind regards
Jill

Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant,
gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking
so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously
give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.

Nelson Mandela is a great example of a man who chose his attitude despite being imprisoned for 27 years.
If he was able to chose to get to know his prison guards – to understand them and ultimately use this knowledge to unite a nation – then who are we to allow our circumstances to prevent us doing what we know we need to do?

You can choose not to be angry with me!
August 24, 2010 by bizblog
We can choose our thoughts – even if we can’t choose what happens to us. We can choose how we respond.
I talk frequently about how we can choose our thoughts and emotions! Having young children keeps me walking my talk.
Like the day my seven-year old daughter said to me “Mummy, you can choose not to be angry with me!” Don’t you love the way children repeat back to you what you’ve said?
This wise crack came only days after her experience with choosing emotions:
She had been feeling a little bit grumpy before school and I said to her: “Well you’ve a choice, you can choose to feel positive today or you can feel grumpy.” It’s also important to acknowledge the things that are bugging us, so I thought it important to have a really good chat with her that day.
So on the way to the school, we were chatting about other things. We found things that she was happy and grateful for. We talked about what was really going on in her heart. When you focus on the things that you like and are grateful for, you start to see more great things in your life.
She pointed out that it’s wonderful to have the trees and flowers, open spaces, parks – branches, leaves, blue sky and the freedom to be able to walk to school.
That afternoon she said to me: “Mummy, now that I have made a decision to be so happy…I can’t think of any reasons why I would want to be grumpy. “
So I like to leave you with that thought…Think today about all the reasons to be happy because when you have done that…you won’t be able to think of one single reason why you would want to be unhappy!
So have a great day!
Is your Goal inspiring enough for you?

This morning I was listening to my mentor, Bob Proctor, as I have so often, talk about goals. He mentioned how the goal that is right for you is one that inspires you, that excites you and challenges you. Which got me thinking….
How often have you written your goals down, and looked at the list and felt very little emotion? Or perhaps despondent? This is because we have been conditioned to only strive for things that we know we can achieve. When last did you think of something you really, really want, but didn’t have a clue how you would get it?
We are also conditioned to set goals that are realistic (I do believe I have seen this in some goal-setting seminars). Did the Wright brothers have a realistic goal of getting something to fly when previously the airspace was exclusively for birds. Research has proven that sometimes the more unrealistic a goal is, the better the chances of you achieving it.
You see, goals are there to help you grow. When you set goals that you know how to reach, you go sideways – there is no challenge in getting them. This is where procrastination sets in, or even boredom. If you would like to get some passion back into your life, and be really eager to jump out of bed in the morning, then perhaps now is a good time to set bigger, brighter, more exciting goals.
Use your intellectual faculty of imagination – and give your imagination time to focus on the business you would truly love to have; the relationships or the income. If you ever heard a child being reprimanded for day-dreaming, chances are that you decided it was a non-productive activity to let your mind wander. I’d like to challenge you to turn this around in your favour right now. Did you know that Richard Branson went to look at Necker Island long before he could afford to purchase an Island? The Wright brothers set out to create an aircraft that would fly, when no-one had ever succeeded in getting anything off the ground before.
What would you simply LOVE to be doing? How would you like your next financial statement to look? Where would you take a holiday if time and money were no object at all?

Are emotions good or bad?
July 1, 2010 by bizblog
Filed under Change, Goals, Inspiration, Leadership
“It’s over, the mine’s closing – we’ve got to move.” These were the words I heard on January 21st 2009 at 7:49am when my husband called me from work. Three months later, over 1000 people who worked at the nickel mine were out of a job, including my husband.
This is the time when I truly realised how important it was to deal with emotions and to decide which feelings and emotions will serve us best to get us where we want to be.
I also realised how crucial it was to have a coach or mentor to hold me accountable to my goals, particularly at a challenging time like that; Someone who could focus my attention on the opportunities that this unique situation was presenting to me.
Are certain emotions bad? Are there some that we shouldn’t feel? What about the positive thinking fans – are they saying we should be happy all the time?
All emotions have a purpose. In my opinion all emotions are good and healthy!
No-one can tell you which emotions are the ones that are best for you at any point. You are the only one who can control your emotions by selecting which thoughts to plant in your conscious mind.
I use the word “control” lightly – I believe in controlling emotions through selective thoughts that create the feelings. If there is strong emotion due to a great event, it’s important to acknowledge it rather than try and push it down. What happens when you put a lid tightly onto a pot boiling on a stove? It tends to stay on there till the pressure is too strong, at which point it will burst right off. Feel the feelings and verbalise them if you can – channel them in a productive way.
If you are standing on a ledge on the 11th floor, then fear is probably a good emotion to have – it may make you cling to the building and shrink back inside or ask for help. With no fear at all in this instance, you might not live very long! (or is that the reason you were up on the 11th floor ledge anyway?)
Sometimes anger and/or frustration are what you need to get you out of your comfort zone and into action. Complacency keeps us where we are and doesn’t move us anywhere.
The key with emotions and feelings is to recognise that you have the ability to select which emotions you choose to feel for most of the time. Obviously if something happens – a disaster, losing a loved one, the instant reaction is to feel sad, scared or various degrees of upset.
Thoughts cause feelings. You can choose the thoughts that occupy your conscious mind on a daily basis (you can’t always prevent outside intervention from delivering an event that elicits a powerful emotion).
Think of a blackboard – was there a time in your school life that you had blackboards in your classroom? (I’m ageing myself here!) – do you remember when someone scraped their nails down the board and sent shivers down your spine? You can probably feel those shivers right now, even though you are no where near a blackboard! All I have done is planted a thought in your mind, and you instantly feel the feeling. This is how powerful your mind is!
You have the power to choose whether to have the TV on or off. You can listen to any radio station or youtube channel you choose. If one of your loved ones is watching something that gives you a feeling you’d rather not have right now, then you can walk away – you don’t have to sit and watch it!
Where do you really want to end up? What do you choose to do or to be for the rest of your life? If you want to be more successful in business, and are facing some economic challenges, then you might want to screen the information coming into your mind.
Bad news sells media more successfully than good news does, that’s simply a fact of life.
If you are listening to doom and gloom stories on the news, and dwell on these, you might feel down and despondent. Will this be the catalyst you need to get into action to increase your business? In some cases it might, but in most cases, this causes procrastination and a sense of feeling “what’s the point?”
Which emotions or feelings are going to serve you going forward? I would like to suggest that positive uplifting feelings (gratitude, happiness, laughter, optimism) would be more productive than the feelings that create a lower vibration, such as sadness, fear, anger.
Following that phonecall, I experienced first-hand the effects of selectively choosing my emotions. We could dwell in the thoughts of how unfair the situation was (we loved living in this beautiful little coastal village – and had only settled there 18 months before) or we could focus on what outcome we wished to experience. I chose to focus on the outcome, even though there were days where I would rather have yelled and screamed and got more frustrated!
As a new business owner, I recognised that one of the solutions was to increase business coming to me. The funny thing was that on days where I was focused on this aim, I was amazed at how many successful phonecalls I made, how I was invited to speak to businesses and groups far and wide. On days where I chose to go into town and chat to everyone, hearing all the stories of challenges various families were facing, even though I still felt optimistic – those were the days where I made little progress in my business.
You see, when our vibration is low, we don’t feel like taking the action to do the things that get us results. Put a thought into your mind, it creates the feeling, the feeling affects the action we take – and it’s the actions that get results.
When everything is hunky-dory, you can absorb a lot more than you can when you’re facing a challenge. Bad news is like water off a duck’s back when everything is going as you wish it to. But when you are faced with a challenge that you want to overcome or turn into a benefit, then you need to selectively only entertain thoughts that serve you to get where you want to go.
I would like to challenge you to think of which feelings and emotions are serving you right now? Are you feeling like a victim? That the company you worked for gave you a really raw deal? Perhaps they did – but your feeling like a victim and allowing it to eat into your soul is not doing anything to them – it’s only destroying you.
Do you feel like no-one appreciates what you do? Perhaps you’re not appreciating what you do! Bitterness twists your soul – and sours all the relationships you have.
If you would like to feel greater happiness, better business success and a more rewarding life, then you will probably decide to focus on the things around you that are going right. What are you grateful for? What thoughts do you need to think to get you there?
When your mind is occupied by positive thoughts, you are much better equipped to deal with the challenges life throws out. If you’re dwelling on the injustices, another challenge is going to feel like you’re drowning at sea and being hit by yet another wave.
Put everything into perspective:
What is the problem not?
Less than a month after the news of job losses and mine closures were announced, everything was put into perspective for us.
Bush fires in Victoria, Australia, claimed thousands of lives and homes – and went on for days. My heart went out to the families that lost loved ones, lost their homes and pets in the fire. The little issues we were facing were so tiny in comparison.
Look at whatever challenge you might be facing right now and identify what the problem really is, and what it’s not. Is it a matter of life and death? Is it a matter of health? Is it about money? Is it about relationships? Is it about business?
What positive memories or events could come out of this that could make a wonderful difference in your life? Sometimes it takes losing someone near and dear to us to shock us into valuing those left behind.
Have a wonderful day,
Kind regards
Jill

“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at begin to change.” is one of the quotes that has been most meaningful in my life. His perspective that we can influence the world around us is one that is proving more and more correct. As we change our thoughts, our actions change – we alter the way we react to situations, the way we react to the people in our lives. Of course this changes everything around us!
